Favourite Summer Drinks
As the temperatures rise, our thirst grows. So here’s a selection of favourite summer quenchers, perfect for afternoons in the garden.
Let’s start with a tall glass of lemonade with lots of ice. Nothing could be easier to make, although it helps if you have an electric juicer. Mine is ancient - I do believe it was a wedding gift. It is a Braun and it just keeps ticking along. A simple syrup (bring half a cup of sugar to a boil with half a cup of water and stir until dissolved) is added to the juice and voilà - lemonade! You can get fancy and add mint leaves if you like.
Iced tea is ubiquitous in the U.S. whereas here in Canada not so much. Simply asking for tea in a restaurant will not guarantee you Iced Tea. I like to make mine with orange and lemon slices included while the tea steeps.
On the alcoholic side of our summer drinks menu is of course Rosé, which my daughter appropriately calls summer water. Pretty in pink indeed!
Halfway between summer water and lemonade is the shandy, which I think is of British origin. It’s made with equal parts beer and ginger ale and is very refreshing with just a wee kick.😉
And speaking of British, nothing says summer more than a gin and tonic. Lots of lime and ice, please.
One more non-alcoholic bevvy I forgot to mention: cranberry cocktail and soda water. You can make it to whatever proportions you prefer. The colour is great and I sometimes add a splash of orange juice to make it even prettier.
Salute!
