Career Capers Part I
Once upon a time there was a young university graduate who moved to the big city to get a job.
She had no idea what she wanted to do but when offered a position at a big advertising agency she didn’t hesitate to accept the opportunity. Never mind that the job entailed crunching numbers for the media buyers, rather than working in the more glamorous creative side of the business. The pay was decent, the location was great, and there was even the occasional travel to the Montreal office.
Of course that young person was me and let me tell you the real fairy tale aspect to this story.
At a supplier’s party to promote their product, the highlight of the evening was a door prize of two round-trip tickets to Paris. Guess who won? It was all pretty exciting until my boss informed me the next day that company policy stated we could not accept gifts from suppliers. If I kept the tickets, they would have to fire me.
Being young and fancy free, I kept the tickets and went to Paris, by myself. (I cashed in the extra ticket for spending money!) When I got back my boss called and said they had changed the policy because there was no purchase necessary to win the prize and would I like my job back? Soon after I returned to work, I also received a raise.
I guess the moral of the story is: when opportunity knocks, go to Paris! (to be continued…)
