Career Capers Part II

Decisions, decisions - after a few years at the ad agency, my then boyfriend, G, announced he was moving to Western Canada for work - would I like to join him?

Rodin’s The Thinker

Once again when opportunity knocked I said yes. After quitting my job and saying good bye to my family, I found myself flying to a city that I had never even visited before, that was 3,400 kilometers away, with all my worldly possessions packed in a couple of suitcases. When we arrived, I definitely experienced a bit of buyer’s remorse!

That sinking feeling only got worse when we entered the house the boyfriend had rented for us. The walls were adorned with - I kid you not - black velvet paintings, there were large standing metal ashtrays, and the furniture, well, the less said the better!

But we were talking about careers. In a short time I found a job at a local television station. Once again it was not exactly my heart’s desire in terms of content, but I liked the people and the money was okay and so I settled in. Meanwhile, the relationship with G was going downhill. When his father got ill he returned back East but I stayed on, NOT in the rented house in the burbs, but in a cute bachelor apartment in a leafy area close to downtown. I made new friends and found a charismatic new boyfriend.

Times change…

A quick Google search showed that the low rise building where I lived in the late seventies is still standing. However the tv station where I worked (that was in walking distance) has changed both call letters and location.

And then, well what happened next finally led to me finding the career I really wanted. Another exciting trip was involved - stay tuned for more in Part III!

Ciao Bella!
