Favourite Things Part II Toronto
There’s lots to love about my home town, Toronto. Besides being a relatively safe, clean metropolis, with lots of parks and trees, the city offers many special treats for residents and visitors. Here are some of my favourites:
The best views of the Toronto skyline are from the islands
First, the Martin Goodman trail for biking. It runs for 56 kilometres along Lake Ontario, is paved and mainly flat with wonderful views and is cool in summer when the rest of the city swelters.
For running, I love the ravines - micro valleys - that crisscross the city. They are a green respite from city noise and traffic, you truly feel like you’re in another world. Also, the unpaved paths are gentle on old joints!
Run on a soft path in a cool glade? Yes please!
In the summer, each Toronto neighbourhood holds a farmers’ market with beautiful produce and friendly vendors. Fun to wander and a feast for the eyes, and tastebuds.
Culturally, there are many museums and galleries, but my favourite is the AGO, Art Gallery of Ontario. The building itself was updated by internationally known and Canadian born star architect Frank Geary and it is lovely. Of course the art is great and there’s also a members’ lounge if you’d like to have a very civilized afternoon tea or a snack or lunch.
Toronto has a thriving coffee culture. I love to try new places when I’m out for a bike ride and would definitely recommend one of the the several Dark Horse cafes, also Neo Coffee bar is excellent.
My beverage of choice is a flat white😊
This sweet patio is at Found Coffee in the Bellwoods area (love the cups!).
Finally, the Toronto Islands, accessible by a short ferry ride from the waterfront. Great views of the city skyline, beaches (including a nude one for those so inclined) and acres of beautiful parkland.
One more thing, and probably the best thing about living in the city - I don’t have to drive a car to get to all my favourite places!
