Making Art

If you have big blank space on your wall, making your own art can be a rewarding creative endeavour.

I am not the least bit artistic in terms of being able to draw, but I’ve made three art projects for my home that I’m quite proud of. Best of all, they didn’t break the bank.

For the first design in the front entryway, I drew on my love of textiles and rudimentary sewing skills. Once I had the large piece of linen (in place of artist’s canvas) for the background, it was a simple matter of cutting out shapes in velvet and hand sewing them to the panel. I then added a backing for structure and hung the piece from a dowel rod purchased at a hardware store.

In the stair well, I used an actual canvas, painted it off white, and then glued on yarn in squiggly designs. This was fun! I added woolen fabrics in rectangular and round shapes that were sewn directly on the canvas with embroidery thread. When I went to get it framed at a local shop, the owner put it in the window and asked if I could make more for him to sell!

The final creation hangs in the upstairs landing over the acrylic console table. Again it is a wall hanging with simple shapes of fabric in colours that complement the tablescape below.

Unleash your inner creative spirit! Make art for your home - if I can do it so can you (and probably better!)

Ciao Bella!
