My Favourite Things - Getting Dressed

Is there any item of clothing (not counting pyjamas) more comfy, more attractive, more universally loved than a fresh white cotton tee shirt? It goes with everything from jeans to dress pants, under jumpers or sweaters or shirts or jackets. A white tee looks good on most everyone. You can dress it up with gold chains and pendants or dress it down with sneakers or Doc Martens (more about those later).

I have yet to find the perfect white tee shirt but I have enjoyed wearing ones from Old Navy as well as Madewell, Theory and a James Perse men’s version.

In the case of white tee shirts, old and stained does not cut it. Unlike shoes, they do not need to be worn in to be comfortable, in fact the newer and whiter the better!

Next on my list of favourite things, almost goes without saying, jeans of course. We won’t state more than they need to be comfy and fit well. Period.

Moving on, I adore cardigans. In fact I’m knitting a new one as we speak. I love that you can take them off easily if you get hot, and that they can be unbuttoned to show off a pretty blouse or camisole. Short or long or in between - yes! Let’s have them all.

I mentioned Doc Martens earlier. A little dressier than a sneaker, Docs are still super comfy and I like the slightly subversive combat boot vibe. Good with skirts and dresses as well as jeans.

Jewelry to your outfit is like the icing on a cake. Unlike the late Iris Apfel, I’m of the less is more persuasion. I do like gold bracelets and a nice watch, things that never go out of style.

Finally let’s talk about handbags. I really love clothes that have lots of pockets so I don’t have to carry a heavy leather bag. That said, there are times when the kick of colour from a cute handbag can add a lot to an outfit if you’re “dressing up.”

As you can tell, I’m all about comfort when getting dressed. But I definitely relate to the Italian concept of bella figura - the idea of putting your best foot forward to greet the world.
