Hello! I’m Jane.
This blog is about the little daily things that keep me active and inspired in my seventies. I definitely take each day as it comes and try to live in the moment.
Welcome, would you like a cup of tea and a cookie?
My Favourite Things - Getting Dressed
Is there any item of clothing (not counting pyjamas) more comfy, more attractive, more universally loved than a fresh white cotton tee shirt? It goes with everything from jeans to dress pants, under jumpers or sweaters or shirts or jackets.
Chocolate Oatmeal Brownies
This is one of my all-time favourite desserts. I dupe myself into believing it is a healthy option because of the oatmeal. (It’s actually not because of the butter and sugar😉)
Easy Peasy Pasta
Okay I admit it, now and then I do enjoy scrolling aimlessly through social media sites - the recipes, the home decor, the fashion - it’s all fun to discover and be inspired.
Rhubarb Pie
At last week’s family dinner, my son requested I make one of his favourite desserts, rhubarb pie. “Mom, it’s spring, isn’t rhubarb in season now?” he said. Yes, the weather is definitely warming up. Rhubarb pie is easy to make and is indeed delicious, especially with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. How could I say no?
The Zen of Knitting
I started knitting like everyone else: I made a scarf, using big fat needles, and made a lot of big fat mistakes. But surprisingly, I didn’t give up and I eventually decided that it might be more interesting to make say, a hat or, gulp, a sweater.
Food Glorious Food
Nobody’s perfect (except maybe my dental hygienist who never eats sweets!) So yes, I bake and eat cookies, cakes, squares, scones, and being the carb queen that I am, my favourite, bread.
The Reluctant Runner
I don’t love running. Even though I’ve been doing it for over 35 years, ever since my friend Sue, whom I met skiing in the singles line at Sunshine Mountain in western Canada, dragged me reluctantly to a local track to join her for a few laps.
Table for One
Most nights I cook dinner at home just for me. Rarely I will get takeout (sushi - yum) but generally I’m not a fan of restaurant meals unless it’s a special place.
Never Say Never
The day I brought my first-born home from the hospital was one of the happiest of my life. We had just moved into our first house (yes the move happened when I was eight months pregnant and on a hot and humid June day), and I was beyond excited to play the new role of mother and homemaker.
Making Art
If you have big blank space on your wall, making your own art can be a rewarding creative endeavour.
Peanut Butter Cookies
I’ve been making these treats for many years, ever since my kids were small and I received a free Quaker Oats cook book (pamphlet really) in the mail. Full name The Quaker Oats Wholegrain Cookbook. My copy has been taped together and is missing the cover’s front corner. The pages are stained with age and splattered ingredients, but in a good way!
Age is Just a Number
Remember the movie The Age of Adaline? Blake Lively plays Adaline Bowman, a young woman who stops aging following an accident at the age of 29. As Adaline negotiates a life on the run because she has turned into a freak and people want to perform experiments on her, the viewer is left thinking “be careful what you wish for!”
